5 Remedies You Need If You’re Into Gardening

Full disclosure - I’ve never been much of a gardener myself.

Plants usually prefer me to stay away from them. But this year, I have been trying to remedy that (excuse the pun).

I started my ambitions with a small garden last year which branched off my deck. It has flourished, so this year I decided to get a little braver. I have since been rescuing my abandoned greenhouse from Mother Nature. The battle is not over yet, but with what I have cleared, I now have a few beds of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and broccoli emerging. Oh the sense of achievement!

There have been 3-4 faithful remedies I have used to help prevent sore muscles and sunburn during these days, and I’ve added a couple more that may be more suitable to you.

Arnica - Of course, faithful Arnica is the first remedy I go to for sore muscles, whacks to the shin with the hoe, and general maladies and scrapes.

Rhus Tox - Lifting wood and weeds, digging and loading compost meant some big muscles groups were put to good use. I take Rhus Tox for extra support, especially when I began to stiffen up later in the day. It’s also a good one for itchy skin caused by grass allergies.

Ruta Grav - This is more for the finer ligaments and muscles that are affected when gardening. Bending while potting, tying small knots and weeding can often overstretch these areas.

Sol - My old summer faithful. Sol is a necessity in my household. The first day gardening under clear skies, I took Sol only in the morning thinking the sun would be more gentle at that time of year. But I overestimated the ability of my pasty white skin to cope. At the end of the day, two lines of red had emerged on my back where I hadn’t reached with the sunblock. Because I had taken a dose of Sol, the sunburn already looked mostly healed, as if it was a week old. There was no heat at all. I learned my lesson quickly and have since kept up with my sun care regime.

Mixed Pollen and Grasses - I am often stuffed up when I come in from all the pollens and the grass particles I’ve inhaled. This remedy helps with hay fever symptoms so I don’t end up blocked up or sneezing, and more importantly snoring all night (or so my husband tells me).
