Anas Barb / Oscillococcinum — A Remedy to Have on Hand for Winter
As we head into the colder months, one of the remedies I always like to have on hand is Anas Barb - also known as Oscillococcinum.
It’s a simple, practical support that can be used:
when you’ve been exposed to flu
at the first signs of symptoms
during illness
and while recovering
For families, it’s one of those remedies that’s helpful to already have in the cupboard — rather than trying to find it when everyone is unwell.
What is Anas Barb used for?
Anas Barb is most commonly used around flu-like symptoms, such as:
body aches
fatigue
chills
that heavy, “hit by a truck” feeling
A little history….
Oscillococcinum has an interesting history and is widely used in France, where it’s commonly available over the counter during flu season.
The remedy traces back to 1917, when French physician Joseph Roy was working during the Spanish influenza pandemic. He identified a strange microorganism present in patients with influenza, which he later referred to as the oscillococcus.
He began to see this microorganism in many other illnesses too - from cancers and tuberculosis to skin conditions such as eczema.
Homeopath Léon Vannier later developed this into a remedy. The preparation used today is derived from duck (traditionally referred to as goose) liver and heart.
Today, Oscillococcinum remains one of the most widely used homeopathic remedies in France for flu-like symptoms.
What is homeoprophylaxis?
You may have heard the term homeoprophylaxis.
This simply means using a homeopathic remedy to support the body’s natural response when something is circulating in the community.
Rather than treating a specific diagnosis, the aim is to:
support the immune system
help the body respond more effectively
and in some cases reduce the intensity of symptoms
Oscillococcinum is commonly used in this way during flu season.
If you’d like to read more about homeoprophylaxis, you can do so here:
When would you use it?
People often use Anas Barb:
when flu is going around in the community
after known exposure
at the very first signs of illness
or early in the course of flu-like symptoms
It can also be helpful during recovery, when the body is still feeling depleted.
My Story
My first real experience with Anas Barb was when my eldest child was about 18 months old.
I was in my first year of studying homeopathy when he became very unwell with swine flu. My normally busy, active, bouncing-off-the-walls little boy became floppy, weak, and his temperature just kept climbing.
At one point, I became so concerned that I called an ambulance, as he was starting to go blue in the face with his huge fever.
At Day 3, and panicking by this point, I reached out to my tutor, Julie Andrews. Julie prescribed Anas Barb alongside Pulsatilla (which ended up being one of his key constitutional remedies).
I gave the remedies in the morning, and by the afternoon, he was more alert, eating again, and beginning to bounce back after several days of getting progressively sicker and sicker.
It was my first real ‘Wow, Homeopathy!’ moment. Such a swift change in my boy, such a relief for me as a Mum, and so easy and simple!
A note on support and individual care
While remedies like Anas Barb can be very helpful, they are just one part of the picture.
If you find that:
you tend to get very run down
symptoms linger
or you’re needing repeated support
then it can be helpful to look a bit deeper at what your body needs.
This is where a more individualised approach — whether through consultation or tools like an OligoScan — can give a clearer picture.
How to Take
To support your body generally in flu season, you can take or give a dose to your family once a month. This is where you will be using it as a homeoprophylactic remedy.
If you know the flu is at school or work, you can take it twice weekly, or even daily if you’re in direct contact with a sick person (no longer than three days unless by homeopath prescription).
Lastly, if you or your family have the flu, you can give it one to three times daily to support the immune system. This remedy also works really well as a general support alongside a remedy that has been selected to match the actual symptoms showing up.
Having a few key remedies on hand for winter can make a real difference — especially when used early.
Anas Barb is one I reach for often during this time of year, and it’s a great addition to a home kit.
