6 Reasons You Might Still Be Getting Sick

It can be so frustrating! You're doing everything right, you're following your remedy prescription to the letter, trying to do the best by your diet and health, and you or your child still come down sick. What’s going on! The good news is, you haven’t done anything wrong, and this may be part of the healing process.

Here's what's often happening:

1. Good Health = Good Detox

Cold and flu symptoms are often confused with detox. Detox can look like cold and flu. Fevers, headaches and fatigue can also be the body doing important work. Fevers are like a furnace burning rubbish, and fatigue means you need to rest so your body has more energy to do what it needs to.

When a body is feeling good and strong, it naturally wants to get rid of what it doesn’t want anymore. Think of this like an episode of the program ‘Hoarders’. The body starts to remove the crap that has piled up - and it has to go somewhere. So out it comes through our detox pathways (snot, vomit, stools, urine, blood, sweat, tears - even earwax!). Sometimes, it takes a lot of energy, hence the fatigue and fluey symptoms. It’s important to rest here so the body can get rid of what it wants to and start repairing.

If things are blocked in those elimination pathways, then you’ll need to work to unblock them. The best thing to do is keep in touch with your homeopath so they can oversee your symptoms and manage them.

2. Something was Lurking

Again, when a body is good and strong, it is more able to deal with viruses and bacterias. When it is suppressed or exhausted, it just survives. Think of the early days after having a baby, or a time when you had a massive life event going on. Did you have a spotless house? Were you at your best kept? Did you keep on top of the little things? No - you just survived by doing the bare minimum. This is also how the body copes when it’s not in a good way. It hides toxins in organs, suppresses the immune response, lowers the energy output and trudges on.

When it feels stronger though, it rolls up it’s sleeves and gets stuck in. That illness could have been sitting there for a while but now your system is ready to evict this squatter!

This is usually a good response - but always confirm with your homeopath if you’re unsure.

2. Something’s In the Way

Your body may be trying to heal and detox and rebuild and has found it has hit a wall. This could be that it needs extra help to deal with toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, parasites or bacteria and viruses. An Oligoscan could be very helpful here.

It could also mean you’ve run into a Miasmatic wall. Miasms are what we homeopaths call inherited susceptibilities (think genetics, long before genetics were actually discovered). They can cause blocks to healing and need to be addressed in their own right. Your homeopath will identify and prescribe if they feel a miasm is creating an Obstacle to Cure.

3. You Might Have Reached Another Layer of the Onion

We humans are like onions. One prescription may clear several layers but eventually you’ll come up with a different remedy picture. This should be old symptoms reappearing - which may feel like a complete step backwards. The good news is that it’s absolutely not the case. You’re actually reversing back in time to past blockages that your cells still remember. This means your body is ready to deal with this and you need to book your Follow Up!

3. What Looks like Sickness Might Be an Echo

Sometimes what looks like getting sick is actually an echo — a brief flare of old symptoms. The symptoms will be familiar, and they won’t be as intense as they once were. They should be shorter in duration too, and then subside. If this isn’t the case, then congratulations! You’ve reached a new layer to address (see No. 3 for Layers).

4. You Need Rest

Remedies work with your body — they don't override it completely. If you're exhausted, stressed, eating poorly, or you've just been exposed to something really nasty (I'm looking at you, daycare germs), your body has a lot to deal with.

4. You Need Rest

If you’re fatigued and feel like you need lots of sleep after your remedy, or you develop cold or flu symptoms, this is is your body telling you to rest! Rest and sleep are hands-down the most powerful healing tools we have to heal. Your body wants to use all that energy to fix itself, so the best thing to do is to let it.

So listen to that body! Have an early night, take time off, give your system a chance. Again, discuss this with your homeopath if you feel the fatigue is more than just system recovery. Your body tells us what it wants in symptoms, and it’s our job as homeopaths to decipher that.

5. Your Body Needs Extra Support

Poor nutrition and low vitamins and minerals can mean your body doesn’t have the fuel it needs to keep the repairs up, and the remedy can be working very hard to overcome this but not quite able to hit the mark.

Sorting the right nutrition is like building the platform that the remedy can really start to do it’s work on. This is also where an Oligoscan can be very useful.

Getting Sick Might Not Be Getting Sick at All

Your illness symptoms could have nothing to do with actually being sick. In fact, it could indicate great progress. In homeopathy we want to uncover and release symptoms to heal rather than suppress them, and that’s why the journey can feel very different to what you may be used to with conventional treatment.

When to Reach Out

The short answer - whenever you have questions! The more you get familiar with how your system works, the easier your healing journey will be. And your homeopath is there to help you get there.
